After gaining a PhD at the University of Manchester, he dropped out from a subsequent post-graduate course at St Catharine's College, Cambridge,〔Cathy Scott-Clark and Adrian Levy ("Who was Gareth Williams?" ) ''The Guardian'', 20 November 2010.〕 and took up employment with GCHQ in Cheltenham in 2001,〔 renting a room for a decade in Prestbury, Gloucestershire.
